Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas Awards New Grants

AUSTIN — The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) today awarded 49 new academic research grants and eight prevention grants totaling more than $73.5 million towards advancing the fight against cancer. “CPRIT enlarges Texas’ critical mass of research and adds to our world class research teams at the state’s institutions,” said Wayne Roberts, CPRIT Chief Executive Officer. “CPRIT grants support novel evidence-based prevention screening for lung cancer — the leading cause of cancer deaths in Texas.” CPRIT has awarded 1,247 grants totaling more than $1.95 billion. CPRIT is now past the two-thirds mark in the state’s historical 2007 constitutional commitment of $3 billion to fight cancer. During the 85th Texas Legislature, CPRIT’s Sunset Review date was extended by two years to 2023 to allow the agency to use fully all funds approved by Texas voters.

AUSTIN – The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) today awarded three new academic research grants and one prevention grant totaling more than $10 million towards advancing the fight against cancer. “Today, CPRIT invested in both experienced and promising young investigators in cancer research, as well as prevention efforts that fight liver cancer–a growing threat to public health in Texas,” said Wayne Roberts, CPRIT Chief Executive Officer. “These awards address CPRIT’s priorities of attracting outstanding researchers to Texas and addressing disparities and underserved populations.”

AUSTIN – Statement from CPRIT CEO Wayne Roberts:

On this day ten years ago, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas became a reality. The citizens of Texas voted overwhelmingly to support Proposition 15, the constitutional amendment authorizing the establishment an agency dedicated to funding innovative cancer research, prevention programs and speed the development of new products through public-private agreements.

Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas Awards 60 New Grants

AUSTIN — The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) today awarded 60 new academic research, prevention, and product development research grants totaling more than $102 million towards advancing the fight against cancer.

Fifty-one of the awards, totaling more than $79 million, went to academic research grants, with 14 for recruiting outstanding cancer researchers to Texas. Eight prevention services grants were awarded totaling $14 million as well as one product development research grant for $9 million.

85th Legislature Update From CPRIT CEO Wayne Roberts

On June 9th Governor Greg Abbott signed into law Senate Bill 81, extending CPRIT’s Sunset Review date by two years from 2021 to 2023.

SB 81’s Sunset extension allows CPRIT to utilize fully the $3 billion authorized by the citizens of Texas for this historical undertaking. In addition, the bill provides CPRIT with the additional tools to manage the state’s investments more efficiently and with continued operational transparency. The votes for SB 81 in both chambers of the legislature are extremely encouraging and demonstrated strong CPRIT support—no significant vote came in less than a two-to-one margin.

Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas Awards 10 New Grants

AUSTIN – The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) today awarded more than $25 million in new grants advancing the fight against cancer. All 10 grants were made through the CPRIT Scholars program.

One of CPRIT’s goals is to bolster cancer research by providing financial support to attract world-class research scientists to Texas universities and cancer research institutes through CPRIT Scholars recruitment grants. Today CPRIT approved more than $25 million for eight First-Time, Tenure-Track Faculty Member grants, one Established Investigators grant, and one Rising Stars grant.
