CPRIT approves almost $100 million in grants to advance the fight against cancer in Texas

(AUSTIN) Today, the governing body of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) has approved $98,592,155 million in grants to advance the state’s fight against cancer. The grants are a mix of academic research and prevention projects and represents the largest public state commitment to cancer research by any U.S. state.

“Every Texan should be proud of what CPRIT has done today to further the fight against cancer,” said CEO Wayne Roberts. “CPRIT and our grantees are making an impact unlike any other state and today’s vote is continued confirmation that Texas is a national leader in cancer research and prevention.”

(AUSTIN) Today, during the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) quarterly meeting, Wayne Roberts, Chief Executive Officer made the following statement: 

“When I was recruited to CPRIT in late 2012 as interim director, it was made clear that I was temporary, here for the 83rd Legislature and gone.

That interim has lasted longer than expected.  Now, after over eleven years at CPRIT’s helm, I will step aside at the end of June. 

CPRIT receives major public service award from state science organization

(AUSTIN) On Monday, the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology (TAMEST) presented the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) with the Kay Bailey Hutchison Distinguished Service Award at their 2024 Annual Conference held in Austin. Wayne Roberts, CPRIT Chief Executive Officer, and Dr. Michelle Le Beau, CPRIT Chief Scientific Officer, accepted the award on behalf of the agency at the opening reception of the conference held at the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center. CPRIT is proud to introduce our 2023 Annual Report and review our fourteenth year as the state’s cancer-fighting agency.

Created by the Texas Legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support and validated by the people of Texas in two statewide votes, Texans entrust CPRIT with $6 billion to support groundbreaking research into preventing, diagnosing, treating, and surviving cancer. As a result, CPRIT is the second largest public funder of cancer research in the U.S., following only the National Cancer Institute.

CPRIT illustrates global impact with $63 million to bring innovative researchers and companies to Texas from around the world

(AUSTIN) The governing body of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) has approved $63 million in grants that illustrate the agency’s reach not only in Texas but around the world. The grants include recruitment of a cancer researcher from Switzerland and an Israeli company developing a new product to ease the burden on breast cancer patients. The CPRIT Oversight Committee approved awards at their quarterly meeting held today at the Barbara Jordan State Office Building in Austin.

“Today’s slate of awards clearly illustrates how CPRIT is making Texas a global leader in cancer research,” said CPRIT CEO Wayne Roberts. “Whether it’s Switzerland, Israel, Houston, or Dallas, CPRIT is funding the innovators and the ideas that will change the future in the fight against cancer. Around the world, CPRIT has made Texas the new home for innovation in medical research and life science.”

CPRIT CEO Recognized by Texas Healthcare and Bioscience Institute at Fall Summit

(AUSTIN) At its annual Fall Policy Summit at the Stephen F. Austin Hotel in downtown Austin, the Texas Healthcare and Bioscience Institute (THBI) recognized CPRIT Chief Executive Officer Wayne Roberts with its highest honor, the Luminary Award. Each year, THBI’s membership nominates individuals who have had an impact on the life science and biotech community through policy, advocacy, and research.
