CPRIT Welcomes New Staff

(AUSTIN) This week, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) welcomed two new executive staff members, filling vacancies left by staff assuming new duties following the change in leadership over the summerAttorney John Ellis is the new General Counsel for CPRIT, taking over for Kristen Doyle, who assumed the role as Chief Executive Officer in JulyGrant Weaver steps in as the new Chief Financial Officer, following Heidi McConnell who recently assumed the role of Deputy Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer. 

CPRIT awards more than $60 million to boost Texas’ fight against cancer

(AUSTIN) Today, the governing body of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) approved $60.6 million in grants to advance the state’s fight against cancer. The grants fund a wide array of academic research projects, including CPRIT Scholar recruitment awards, innovative core facilities, and developmental research focusing on promising new insights into the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of cancer. 

“The grants approved today show the impact CPRIT is having across the board in cancer research,” said CPRIT CEO Kristen Doyle. “By supporting the vital core facilities that researchers need, funding groundbreaking research and deepening the bench of clinical trial investigators, CPRIT is fulfilling the promise central to our mission:  we are helping Texans conquer cancer.”

CPRIT adds a new board member: Tommy Taylor

(AUSTIN) The Cancer and Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), the largest state funder of cancer research in the nation, has gained a new board member with the appointment of Dallas attorney Thomas "Tommy" Taylor. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick appointed Taylor to serve on the CPRIT Oversight Committee for a term that expires January 31, 2029.  

Taylor has more than 47 years of experience representing companies in all facets of their business, including long range planning, contract negotiation, mergers and acquisitions, financing, state and federal regulations, alternative dispute resolution and litigation.  He holds BBA, JD and LLM degrees, and is licensed in the State of Texas and the Supreme Court of the United States. 

New CEO Takes Over AT CPRIT

(AUSTIN) Kristen Doyle has assumed the role of chief executive officer of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas after former CEO Wayne Roberts stepped down on June 30 in a planned transition. Doyle, an attorney and longtime employee of the agency, had most recently served as CPRIT’s deputy executive officer and general counsel. Roberts announced his departure earlier this year and in May the CPRIT governing board unanimously voted to hire Doyle as his replacement.  

“I am honored by the confidence entrusted to me by the Oversight Committee and the opportunity to lead this agency,” said Doyle. “I am excited by the challenges and possibilities that lie ahead for this agency as we continue our mission of conquering cancer for all Texans.”

CPRIT names new CEO

(AUSTIN) Today, the governing body of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) approved Kristen Doyle as the new CPRIT Chief Executive Officer beginning July 1. Ms. Doyle, currently Deputy Executive Officer and General Counsel, will succeed Wayne Roberts who will step down on June 30 after 12 years as chief executive.

“The Oversight Committee makes many important decisions,” said Roberts, “but perhaps none more important than who leads the talented CPRIT team.  Kristen is the most qualified person to steer CPRIT through the next decade. She has vast institutional knowledge of the agency, the workings of the Capitol community, the life science ecosystem, and cancer research and prevention. With her passion for CPRIT’s mission I know she’s the right person at the right time.”
