(AUSTIN) The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) announces the release of the 2024 Texas Cancer Plan, an updated report outlining actionable goals, objectives, and strategies to reduce the burden of cancer for communities and individuals across Texas. The 2024 Texas Cancer Plan can be found at www.texascancerplan.org.

“The 2024 Texas Cancer Plan is a road map of ongoing efforts across our state to eradicate cancer and reflects the changes, progress, and advances, in cancer prevention and control since 2018,” said Kristen Doyle, CPRIT Chief Executive Officer. “Everyone in Texas deserves the opportunity to lead a healthy and fulfilling life, free of cancer. Progress in the fight against cancer depends on all Texans working to create a healthier Texas and a brighter future. Together, Texans will conquer cancer.”

The 2024 Texas Cancer Plan, presented online for the first time, consists of twenty goals that, if achieved, will have a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer. The report organizes the goals into topics that address the complex nature of the challenge, from prevention and risk reduction to screening, early detection, and survivorship. Each goal contains objectives and strategic actions to guide stakeholders as well as metrics showing baseline and target information.

The report also highlights the cancer burden in Texas, including the challenges faced by our rural communities, the disparities in the incidence and survivability of cancer among certain racial and ethnic groups, and the impact of cancer among children, adolescents, and young adults.

The 2024 Texas Cancer Plan incorporates interactive maps, charts, and graphics illustrating key metrics, such as cancer incidence rates and lung cancer screening rates in Texas and the United States.

“The 2024 Texas Cancer Plan highlights that there has been tremendous change in the cancer continuum,” said CPRIT Program Manager for Prevention Carlton Allen. “While we may not have all the answers to end cancer today, there are actionable steps we can take right now to reduce its impact and prevent it altogether.”

The Texas Legislature charged CPRIT with the responsibility of facilitating the development of the Texas Cancer Plan. The development process involves a working group of public health experts, the Cancer Alliance of Texas, and numerous stakeholders. Texas is one of 65 states, tribes and territories producing and implementing a cancer plan that addresses cancer-related priorities for their state and region to align with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program.
