For people with a type of breast cancer called triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) that spreads to the brain, the average survival time is only about 3-4 months, which is much shorter than for other types of breast cancer. The main treatment for this type of cancer is chemotherapy, which can be effective but also has side effects. One problem is that the chemotherapy drugs can stay in the body for a long time, affecting not only the cancer cells but also healthy cells and the immune system. This weakening of the immune system can make it harder for other treatments to work. So, we need better ways to deliver these drugs directly to the cancer cells while minimizing their impact on the rest of the body. Our goal is to create a new way to deliver chemotherapy drugs to brain metastases in TNBC patients using tiny gold nanoparticles. These nanoparticles can help get the drugs to the cancer cells more effectively and clear them from the rest of the body faster. We have done some research that shows these tiny gold nanoparticles can target breast tumors and even penetrate the blood-brain barrier to reach brain tumors more effectively than larger particles. In this project, we want to take a big step forward in using these tiny gold nanoparticles to treat TNBC brain metastases. We believe that they can deliver chemotherapy drugs to the cancer cells while preserving the immune cells needed for anti-tumor treatments. If we are successful, this could lead to better treatments for breast cancer that has spread to the brain and may also help with other brain tumors in the future. It's an exciting opportunity to improve the lives of cancer patients and understand more about how to use tiny nanoparticles for drug delivery in the brain.
