The Cancer Therapeutics Training Program (CTTP) is a multi-institutional training program that will prepare post-doctoral trainees for future careers in drug discovery research in either academia or the pharmaceutical industry. The Program will address the need in Texas for more scientists trained with the essential skills and knowledge necessary to translate discoveries made in the laboratory into new drugs for the treatment of patients with cancer. The CTTP is a partnership between the Gulf Coast Consortia (GCC) Innovative Drug Discovery and Development Consortium (GCC-IDDD) and four partner institutions, Texas A&M University, UTHealth Science Center – Houston, Texas Southern University and Baylor College of Medicine. The CTTP will take full advantage of the CPRIT-funded core laboratories, the large pool of faculty and talented post-docs engaged in cancer therapeutics research in the four institutions as the basis for an innovative new training program. The CTTP will have a Training Plan with three major components: 1) a Research Training Program that will provide trainees in the practical aspects of cancer drug discovery research; 2) an Instructional Curriculum that provides trainees with basic knowledge about cancer therapies and commercialization strategies; and 3) a Career Development Program to build skills and and provides information on career opportunities in cancer R&D. The CTTP will have a Leadership Team led by Drs. Davies, Liu, Tomlinson and An, that will have overall responsibility for the operation of the Program with support from Steering and the Training Program Committees. The CTTP and its trainees will engage in a very active program of outreach and recruitment to expand the representation of URM individuals in the pool of trainees engaged in cancer therapeutics research. These well-trained CTTP Fellows will inevitably impact the development of many new therapies for the treatment of cancer.
