Lay Summary |
Patients with metastatic prostate cancer can currently hope only for prolongation of survival. Metastatic dissemination frequently occurs before the primary cancer becomes clinically detectable, and evidence indicates that disseminated tumor cells remain dormant (i.e. quiescent and non-proliferating) often for prolonged times before undergoing reactivation and outgrowing into life-threatening metastases. The events and mechanisms resulting in the awakening of dormant malignant cells that have seeded distant organs are currently unknown. In this proposal, we aim to understand these mechanisms by using transplantation models and genetically engineered mouse models of prostate cancer metastasis... |
