Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the US, with an estimated 46,420 new cases and 39,590 deaths in the United States in 2014. It is projected to be the second leading cause of American cancer deaths by 2030. Within 5 years following diagnosis, 93.3% of these patients succumb to the disease. This disease is devastating and currently specific therapies are lacking, leading to rapid death of all patients, coupled with pain and severe despair. The annual economic toll of pancreatic cancer is estimated between $2.6 and $4.9 billion dollars to the US healthcare system.
