The myelosdysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of leukemias that affect older individuals. This disease results in progressive anemia, low platelets and increased risk of infections and transformation to acute myelogenous leukemia. At the present time there is no cure for this disease, except for the rare patient that is a candidate for transplantation. Most patients will eventually die from complications of MDS. A decade ago, several new agents with activity in MDS were developed. These included the hypomethylating agents and lenalidomide.
