Dr. Hudson's research focuses on the mechanisms of immune system failure in infections and cancer.  Anti-tumor immunity is an important part of tumor control and treatment. One class of immune cells, known as T cells, can specifically recognize and kill tumor cells that express mutated proteins. The presence of these T cells in tumors is positively correlated with patient survival and response to treatment. However, T cell immunity often fails in cancer, allowing tumors to progress. Dr. Hudson's research identifies new strategies to improve T cell function to treat viral infections and cancers. Specifically, Dr. Hudson's laboratory seeks to identify new inhibitory signaling pathways that inhibit T-cell function. Blocking these inhibitory signaling pathways has the potential to improve anti-tumor immunity. In parallel, his research group also works to develop new techniques to study T cell function. His previous work in this area includes inventing a new approach to identify tumor-specific T-cell clones in intact tissue sections. Together, these research areas seek to improve our understanding of T cell biology to develop new treatment approaches for cancer.
