Siyuan Zhang, Ph.D., M.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Pathology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Zhang received an M.D. degree from Peking University Health Science Center, China, and a Ph.D. in cancer biology and molecular cancer therapeutics from the National University of Singapore. He subsequently received a postdoc training at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center focusing on breast cancer drug resistance and cancer metastasis, particularly brain metastasis.  

The central theme of the Zhang laboratory is to explore molecular mechanisms of the dynamic co-evolution between tumor cells and tumor microenvironment (TME) during tumor development, drug resistance, and metastasis.

The central theme of the Zhang laboratory is to explore molecular mechanisms of the dynamic co-evolution between tumor cells and tumor microenvironment (TME) during tumor development, drug resistance, and metastasis. Using multiscale integrated single-cell approaches, coupled with his expertise in translational cancer research, the strive to identify clinically significant issues and swiftly translate the pre-clinic mechanistic insights into clinically translatable treatment regimens.   Tumor brain metastasis is the most common type of brain tumor. The incidence of brain metastasis is rising. The Zhang laboratory integrates multidisciplinary approaches, including cancer biology, neuroscience, bioengineering, and computer sciences, to investigate the dynamic interactions between the metastatic tumor cells and their brain metastatic microenvironment – brain metastatic niche. The recruitment to the Department of Pathology at UT Southwestern Medical Center and generous support from CPRIT enabled the Zhang lab to establish novel experimental systems to explore intricate and dynamic mechanisms of brain metastasis progression.
