Gary Hon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and he is a member of the Cecil H. and Ida Green Center for Reproductive Biology Sciences. Dr. Hon studied computer science and molecular biology as an undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley. As a graduate student under the direction of Dr. Bing Ren at the University of California, San Diego, he pioneered the use of epigenetic signatures to annotate regulatory elements in mammalian cells. Dr. Hon is intensely focused on unraveling the functions of the non-coding genome. A primary interest is to develop a comprehensive understanding of how the millions of non-coding regulatory elements encoded in mammalian genomes precisely coordinate gene expression in developmental and disease contexts. To accomplish this, he takes a systems biology approach: developing and employing integrative techniques at the interface of gene regulation, epigenetics, functional genomics, and bioinformatics.
