Summary of Goals and Objectives |
Selenium has been extensively studied as a chemoprotective agent for decades; however, its molecular mechanism and functional role remain enigmatic. This essential micronutrient is incorporated into proteins in the form of the 21st amino acid, selenocysteine. The resulting selenoproteins are present in all domains of life and have been shown to regulate redox homeostasis. The oxidoreductase function of several selenoproteins has been shown to contribute to the dual personality of selenoproteins in cancer prevention and promotion. I identified an unexpected catalytic activity for Selenoprotein O (SelO), one of the 25 human se... |
