TTUHSC has a strong track record in cancer drug development in both adult and pediatric oncology that has provided access to investigational drugs via clinical trials to patients in our region. The TREC will support research of qualifying junior faculty on the TTUHSC Lubbock, Amarillo, and Abilene campuses, core resources, and recruitment of new junior faculty to TTUHSC. TREC projects will be inclusive of both pediatric and adult cancers. The Administrative Core will facilitate communications in the TREC and with the External Advisory Council (EAC) and will manage funding. The TTUHSC Cancer Animal Facility provides state-of-the art animal facilities for cancer investigators. The South Plains Oncology Consortium (SPOC; www.SPONC.org) carries out early phase oncology clinical trials. The Cancer Biobanking Core banks frozen blood and tumor tissue from cancer patients and grows cancers in the laboratory. The Pharmacokinetics Core measures levels of drugs in the blood of animals and patients. The Flow Cytometry Core provides analysis and sorting of cells with special instruments. The Regulatory Sciences Core will assist TREC investigators in the regulatory aspects of research. The Biostatistics Core will provide biostatistics support. The TREC will support research projects of four junior faculty at any one time, selected by the TREC Steering Committee and EAC (f highly-respected senior cancer investigators from inside and outside of Texas). The initial projects include studies of new anti-cancer drugs and cancer immunotherapy. The TREC will also enable recruiting outstanding junior faculty to West Texas that are focused on cancer drug development and will increase the number of early-phase oncology clinical trials available to patients in the underserved West Texas region.
