The Cancer Research Program of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio spans the training from undergraduate students to postgraduate. The overall program goal of this application is to train individuals in all aspects of cancer research so that they will have an appreciation of the basic science, translational and clinical areas of research. To accomplish this goal, we have developed a training program which spans pre- and postdoctoral education as well as undergraduate education. Predoctoral students will be trained in the Cancer Biology track of the Integrated Multidisciplinary Graduate Program (IMGP) as well as in the Radiological Sciences Program. Five Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. predoctoral students will participate in this training. Postdoctoral students including Ph.D. researchers as well as M.D. fellows will be trained by mentors in these two programs (Cancer Biology and Radiological Sciences) as well as in the three clinical fellowship programs: Hematology and Medical Oncology, Pediatric Oncology, and Urologic Oncology. Eight postdoctoral fellows will be supported each year. . Minority undergraduate students will be introduced to research in a summer program where they will have the opportunity to train with any of the mentors listed in this program. The trainees will participate in didactic and research activities. The research training will be under the 59 funded mentors. Faculty in this program possess a broad range of expertise in cancer research including genomics/proteomics, cell signaling and receptor biology, DNA repair, metastasis, radiology, drug discovery, pediatric oncology, and carcinogenesis and prevention. The curriculum stresses both basic and translational research to provide the broad background in oncology needed for today’s research. These experienced mentors will guide the trainees to develop and execute a research project and aid them in the development of their careers.
