My primary goal is to develop a program of research focused on methods for implementing routine symptom monitoring and management in cancer care using PRO measures. The research outlined in this proposal is designed to improve patient-clinician symptom-related communication by developing reliable and valid disease- and symptom-specific PRO measures (the patient-level), developing PRO measure resources for clinicians (the clinician-level), and utilizing implementation science to address organization-level barriers to incorporating PRO measures into routine symptom monitoring and management in cancer care (the organization-level).

I will use CPRIT support to:

1) Develop a remote symptom monitoring and management system which will utilize a valid and reliable disease- and symptom-specific measure for use in breast cancer care, clinically actionable cut-points for target breast cancer symptoms, and a decision-support system for use by clinicians responding to symptoms in breast cancer care that is integrated with PRO data display in the electronic health record,

2) Establish the feasibility, acceptability, safety, and preliminary effect on patient outcomes of implementing routine symptom monitoring and management using the developed system in routine care,

3) Study the implementation of the system in randomized controlled trials to address organization-level barriers to incorporating PRO measures into routine symptom monitoring and management.

Long-term career goals:

1) Be an expert in identifying factors that challenge implementation of routine symptom monitoring and management using PRO measures, which can be targeted for intervention,

2) Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to implement RCTs of implementation of routine symptom monitoring and management using PRO measures to study workflow and long-term outcomes,

3) Be an active collaborator in team science research related to cancer PRO and symptom science and translation into clinical practice.
