CPRIT is governed by 9 dedicated Texans who together comprise the Oversight Committee. Oversight Committee members are appointed by the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor and the Speaker of the House to serve staggered terms. The Oversight Committee meets at least once every quarter and is led by an Executive Committee.

Will Montgomery

Mr. Montgomery is a partner at Jackson Walker LLP, where his practice focuses on commercial litigation and arbitration.  He is experienced in all aspects of litigation, including jury and non-jury trials, arbitration, mediation.

In recent comments, he expressed a personal stake in helping to steer CPRIT toward success in championing treatments and cures for cancer: “Cancer is a scourge that has touched families throughout Texas, including my own”, Montgomery told D Healthcare Daily. “My father was a cancer researcher, ironically contracting cancer late in his life. My brother recently died of cancer. I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the state and to help accomplish CPRIT’s mission to educate, prevent and discover causes and possible cures for cancer.”

Mr. Montgomery was admitted to the Texas State Bar in 1984.

Mr. Montgomery received his B.A. and his M.A. degrees from Stanford University. He received his J.D. degree from the University of Chicago.

Donald "Dee" Margo

Donald R. "Dee" Margo was elected as the 51st Mayor of El Paso in June 2017 and is the owner of Margo Partners, Inc. Prior to that, Margo worked at the John D. Williams Company for more than 30 years. He worked his way up through the ranks to become the chairman and CEO of the company before the business later sold in 2012 to HUB International, one of the largest brokerage firms in the world. Margo was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2010 and served on the Appropriations Committee and the Land and Resource Management Committee. He has been a strong leader in growing and diversifying El Paso's economy as an active member of the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce, the El Paso Regional Economic Development Corporation, and the Paso Del Norte Group. Margo also helped found the Border Fund, a non-profit foundation providing more than $26 million in charitable grants to local volunteer groups; and Operation Noel, which provides more than 20,000 coats for needy El Paso children, from toddlers to teenagers, each Christmas. As a current member of the World Presidents Organization and past member of the Young Presidents Organization, Margo has been honored as an exemplary role model in business ethics. Margo attended Vanderbilt University on a football scholarship where he received a bachelor's degree in history and economics.

A member of the State Bar of Texas, she has professional legal expertise in areas ranging from alternative energy and capital markets to healthcare and global infrastructure. She has been included in Real Estate Law's "The Best Lawyers in America" listing for the past six years and was recently named "Texas Top Rated Lawyer" by LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell. She holds a bachelor's degree in History from Princeton University and a JD from the University of Texas at Austin. She has been a member of the Ballet Austin Board since 2007.

Pete Geren

Pete Geren is the President of the Sid W. Richardson Foundation, which provides grants to educational, health, human service and cultural nonprofit organizations in Texas. From 2001 to 2009, he served in the U.S. Department of Defense as Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense, Acting Secretary of the Air Force, Under Secretary of the Army and Secretary of the Army. He also served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and was formerly assistant to U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen. Geren received a B.A. from the University of Texas in 1974 and a J.D. from the University of Texas Law school in 1978.

Ned Holmes

Ned Holmes is a successful businessman, philanthropist and civic leader with decades of experience in leading organizations of various sizes. With a career in finance and real estate spanning more than 40 years, Holmes has also been an active supporter of economic development in Houston, including five years on the City of Houston Planning Commission and longtime involvement with the Port of Houston Authority including time as commissioner, chairman and chairman emeritus. He served as chairman of the Greater Houston Partnership in 1999 and served on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission from 2003 to 2007. Holmes resigned from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission in 2007 when he became a Commissioner of the Texas Transportation Commission, a position he held until June of 2012. Holmes graduated from both the University of Texas and the University of Texas Law School.

Mahendra C. Patel, M.D.

Dr. Mahendra C. Patel is a pediatric hematologist-oncologist in San Antonio. He has an extensive record of leadership in the San Antonio medical community, including his time as the Medical Board Chair at Methodist Healthcare System and as the Chief of Staff at Methodist Children’s Hospital. While at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, he was instrumental in developing the division of pediatric neuro-oncology as a principal investigator on numerous phase one/two clinical trials researching brain tumors in pediatric patients.

“We are working to eradicate cancer on multiple fronts from prevention, early detection, to curing cancer using innovative multi-modal systems and also to cure cancer with a continuum of medical and non-medical interventions,” Dr. Patel said. “I look forward to working with the members of the CPRIT Oversight Committee and above all to serving the people of Texas as we continue the fight against cancer.”

William Rice, M.D.

William Rice of Austin is a physician and senior vice president of clinical innovation for St. David’s Healthcare, and the Central and West Texas Division of the Hospital Corporation of America. He is a member of the American and Texas Medical associations, and a past member of the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation and Texas State Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners. He is also a board member and corporate sponsorship committee chair of the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Rice received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and surgical training at St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston.

Craig Rosenfeld, M.D.

Dr. Craig S. Rosenfeld is well-known in the field of biotechnology and oncology after a distinguished career as a physician, advocate and entrepreneur. At nearly every turn, Rosenfeld has led essential cancer-fighting initiatives ranging from direct patient care and teaching medical students to directing bone marrow transplant facilities and founding biotechnology startups. He currently serves as CEO at Collaborative Medical Development, a firm pursuing therapies for neurogenerative and psychiatric diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's & ALS. Rosenfeld is a member of numerous medical organizations including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the New York Academy of Science. He was also highly involved in the Texas Israel Chamber of Commerce, having previously served on the Chamber's Board of Directors.
